My Running Story

Around the end of May, Tom and I made the decision to start running with the goal to run our first 5k at the beginning of October.  To be completely honest, this scared me to death.  I have NEVER been a runner.  In fact, when I was a cheerleader in high school, I would actually dive under flyers that were falling to save them from hitting the mat because the rule was if anyone hits the mat, you run laps!  {Not the smartest thing I ever did, running laps would have been better than dislocating my shoulder!}

When we started running, I could run for 30 seconds and I was done.  Not even a 10 minute walk would allow me to run for another 30 seconds.  I honestly thought that I could not do this and that Tom should just continue training without me.  But...I kept going.

I slowly began to progress to being able to run for two 30-second runs, coupled with walking for 5 minutes in between.  It went to more 30-second runs and shorter walks.  We bumped the 30-second runs to 45-seconds then to 1-minute.

We went "hard" for a few weeks and then suddenly I was facing crippling knee pains.  I try not to complain and just fight through most pains, but this was the worst pain I have ever been in {including dislocating my shoulder twice}.  I could not even walk up the stairs without grimacing in pain.  Again I thought, "There is no possible way I can do this.  I am NOT a runner and never have been a runner."  I would go running/walking {to be honest, there was a lot more walking than running at this point} and then immediately come back, take some Advil, and alternate heating and icing my knees.

I was really worried that I would not be able to go on.  My body was rebelling and I didn't know what to do.  When we started out running, I didn't want to invest too much, since we didn't know how long I would stick this out.  As a last ditch effort to keep this running train going, I broke down and ordered Mueller knee bands that offer support and a new pair of running shoes.

Slowly but surely, the knee pain started to lessen and lessen.  It was miraculous that simply changing my running shoes could solve such terrible pain!

We are less than 4 weeks to our race and I ran my first "official" 5k at the gym this past weekend.  My time for my first and second mile were my personal bests, but the last mile kicked my butt!  However, my motto has become, "I am doing it.  I am getting the miles in.  I have accomplished so much more than I ever thought possible."

At the end of the day, I am still my worst critic.  However, when I look back on where I was only FOUR months ago and where I am now, I am shocked at the progress.   I just have to keep getting out there and putting in the miles.  I don't go to work in the morning dreading going to the gym at night.  In fact, there are some days that I have to remind Tom that we are going to the gym!  It has become such a second nature for us--one of our biggest reasons for never taking advantage our community gym was that we didn't have the time.  All I can say is: there is always the time, you just have to find it!  We are not even sacrificing time together or time watching our shows.  We just have restructured our evenings and there is even still plenty of time to take Elli on her long nightly walk!

Get to Know Me

Since I took such a long break from blogging, I figured it was a good time to do a new introduction post!

Let's see, where should I start?

I am 25 years old, married to my college-sweetheart, somewhat newly married and a somewhat new Virginia resident {can I call being married for TWO years and living in Virginia for THREE years new??  Time flies!!}.  We have a dog, Elli, who we adopted while we were in college and she has been the perfect addition to our family!  We spoil her rotten and with all of her skin allergies, I am thisclose to even making her own food!

I was born and raised in a small town in North Carolina and attended Elon University, which was a mere 45 minutes down the road.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would meet and fall in love with my future husband, who would whisk me away to Virginia after graduation--but that's what happened!

My husband works in athletics and I work at a pediatrics office, handling the scheduling and insurance.  We stay pretty busy with work, but try to keep weekends to spending time with each other and doing fun things around our area.  I hope to start documenting some of the fun things to do in our area, so that if any of y'all are come this way for vacation you can get some ideas!

I am addicted to television!  It is pretty sad--but some of our favorite things to do together is binge watch TV shows!  We just finished watching all of Castle and cannot wait until the new season starts!  Some of my other favorites are Modern Family, Scandal, and The Walking Dead.  Let's just say--we are ready for fall TV in our house!

I love buying makeup and beauty items! I am by no means a "beauty blogger" {to be honest, I have absolutely no idea what category my blog falls under, but oh well!}, but I just love exploring and trying new beauty items!  So don't be surprised if I do an occasional post or two about my recent finds.

I would love to know more about y'all!  Please leave me a comment and introduce yourself and feel free to drop me an e-mail at courtneysorganizedchaos{at}gmail{dot}com!

What I'm Loving

Happy Monday!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend!  We sure did, but as always, it went by way too fast!  My husband and I are currently training for our first 5k.  Now to some a 5k may not seem like a lot, but 4 months ago I couldn't even run for 30 seconds without having to stop!  I'll do a more extensive post about where I am now and what I have found are essential to "surviving" the training process soon!

I thought I would try to find a way to ease myself back into blogging on a more (hopefully) regular basis with a few posts that I can crank out without too much thought and get the blogging juices flowing again (especially since we have been living in our house for a YEAR and we still have yet to unpack everything and I am finally able to even find my computer among the mess!).

So without much more explanation, here are a few things that I am loving lately!

1} I woke up with the wonderful USA Today update that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their second child!  I do not know where my obsession with any and all royal comes from, but I am fully enthralled with the Duchess of Cambridge.  She is just the epitomy of style to me and I cannot wait to follow along with this pregnancy {and probably stalk the exterior of a hospital for hours on end...again}.

2} Reading!  I have finally found the time to start actively reading again--especially since football is in full swing again!  While Tom is watching the games, I usually camp out beside him with a coffee or tea and read for the duration!  Any good book recommendations??

3} Tom and I have been trying to eat more healthy food lately which means that we have been cooking more of our meals at home.  I have loved trying to things--I usually stick to what I absolutely KNOW how to cook and don't branch out.  We have also discovered lots of tasty things from Trader Joe's lately that I might just share in a later post.  The hardest thing for me to cut out are sweets--from milkshakes to candy, it has been a struggle!  However, I did have a moment of weakness yesterday and bought some Trolli sour gummy eggs at the drugstore and when I started eating them, I couldn't even stand them!  I guess eating "good sweets" {FRUIT!} has become much more appetizing to me!

4} I cannot wait for cooler weather!  Now, I do not want to wish summer away because I know when we are in the depths of winter I am going to be praying for warmer weather, but it has been so sweltering hot lately that I just am wishing for mid-60's to low-70's!  We tried to run outside the other night (we have been strictly training in the gym for the past month or so due to the heat) and it was brutal!  I am just dreaming of running on a cool October morning and I cannot wait!

5}  I am so excited to finally get back to blogging!  This past year has flown by--we bought our townhouse last August and it feels like I blinked and we have lived here for a year!  We still have boxes to unpack, and let's face it, if we've lived without it for a year, we probably don't need it! A big reason why I haven't blogged at all is that our office was a disaster zone--a catch-all for everything that we didn't want to unpack!  I have started to sift through the mess and can at least see the top of the desk to get to the keyboard to type!  I am very sad that I have missed documenting a whole year of our life, but here is to (hopefully) staying somewhat consistent from here on out!

I am loving so much more right now, but I have to go switch over a load of laundry so I'm going to leave y'all with that!

Have a wonderful Monday!
